Crah-asy Waves

Stolen, er, cross posted from a group notice to Bluff Cove by Cierra Theriac:

A hurricane must have gone through, because the waves were crah-azy!  But the swell seems to have settled down and is running beautifully. Three Freestyle waves are coming in, including our favorite diagonal wave.

If you ever notice the weather go nuts here and jack up the waves, please let me know so we can get Poseidon over right away to smooth things over.

Have Ya Seen The Awepic?

I sure as heck don’t know what it’s called, but if y’all haven’t seen the wave that’s running at Bundy Reef, you need to check it out.

It looks and surfs like the old school SSi Epic, is 108m, and doesn’t have any of the old lag issues.  I guess some might argue it’s got plenty of taste, but is less filling.  Hey, maybe it’s an Epic Lite.

It sure looks like a tribute to the old school Epic.  Maybe it’s the New Old Epic!

Get over and check it out before it becomes the Not So New Old Epic!!!

JT ain’t no JK

JT Castanea ain’t jok’n around when it comes to his interests in photography and video, whether it’s in SecondLife or that thing some call Real Life.  Some of you may have already seen his work floating around in SL and on FaceBook.

In JT’s own words, “My dad took me in the ocean with a raft when I was about ten.  I could swim and he said, “If you fall off swim that way” and he pointed toward shore.  I was hooked from the start.  I remember the thrill of him telling me the only way to get into this…is to dive right in.  There’s no walkin’ into the ocean.  I spent the next ten years perfecting that head first relationship with the waves and the sea.  I am a true child of the sea and I know this because even when she has me by the throat and pounding me…I feel calm.

The video thing in Second Life sort of just came as a slow process that is still ongoing.  It’s always going to be a work in progress.  The editing of the clips is time consuming even as I get better at it.  Capturing surfers on these waves with different boards is a challenge to render and be cool.  It’s just a thing I’ll keep chargin’.

Photography has always been a passion both real life and SL.  It’s all about lighting and timing in both worlds.  I’ve always believed the “art is in the “seeing” and then go get it.  Take what is given and charge it.  Painting/working it in Photoshop later is so subjective that I end up just testing things and if it looks cool I keep it.  I can see a sort of “style” developing as we tend to stick with stuff we like if it works.  Like all of it, sometimes it works and sometimes you just have to keep trying.”

I hope to be using some of JT’s pictures for an irregular series of posts featuring some of the public surfing spots in SecondLife, so stay tuned (whatever the heck that means for a blog).

JT is also interested in collaborating with others in SL.  If you’re interested in sharing ideas about techniques for photography in Second Life or if you’d like to talk to him about some photos of you or your sim, give JT a holler.  While it might be his preference, I’m sure he does more than just nude photography (coff, coff).

Cheap Date or Cheapskate?

So, how much do y’all figger is a reasonable amount to spend on a date?  Dinner, a couple of drinks, and a movie could be had for about 30 bucks apiece, right?  That works out to be around 74,100L$ based upon today’s exchange rate.  Sounds pretty steep in SL, doesn’t it?  One “adult” drink probably runs around 850L$.

The SL Surfing Association is holding a Summer Fling Dance along with a fund raiser Date Auction with a number of sexy surfers up for grabs!  All you’ve got to do is drop by the auction boards sometime before 8:30PM SLT on September 6th and submit your bid.  You can click on the auction board to get more information about each surfer.  Auction results will be announced at the end of the Summer Fling Dance at Hotel Coronado which begins at 7PM SLT.

All auction proceeds go toward helping fund the SLSA.  If you'd like to show your support, or just looking to meet someone for a date, check out the auction.  We all know surfer chicks ROCK!!!  (OK, the guys to do too).

BTW, yours truly is on the auction block.  Did you know that roundtrip air fair and hotel to the Bahama’s is only about 235,638L$ right now?

Jus say’n…

Mermaids!?! At Bundy Reef?!?

Mermaids you say?  On Bundy Reef?

Well, maybe not true mermaids, but certainly Shack Schapira’s mermaid designs of his C-3 V2 surfboard as shown by Bundy Reef surfers Haylee (hauntedhaylee) and Kantbe Thursday.

The SL Surfing Association Board of Directors are now soliciting feedback from it’s members for consideration of the C-3 V2 as a sanctioned SLSA competition board.   To facilitate availability of a board to try, they have placed a “competition” rezzer on Solace Dreams .  Neptune Maa has a similar rezzer at Tsunami Beach.  These rezzers, however, provide a fixed configuration board set to “Option 3” out of three options and has the fluffy wave support turned off.

Solace Dreams

Tsunami Beach

For a complete evaluation of the capabilities of the C-3 V2, Tsunami Beach and several others have rezzers of fully functional boards so you can try all of the options and on different wave types.  There are a growing number of sims providing the C-3 V2 rezzers.  The following is a partial list of where you can find them (apologies to anyone I've not listed):

Catherine Hill Bay, Apollinaire

Frozen Banana - Fruit Islands

Maoli

Praia do Forte - Cabo Frio

Thessaloniki  - Jamacia

For those of you who would like to try a board on other sims that have rez permissions or rez areas, Shack’s Marketplace store has a free, fully functional demo board available at no cost.  The board will generate a “demo” banner over your head periodically, and derezz itself with not in use (it’s copy, so no worries about losing it).

Personally, I think this is a really fun board and has animations that can look very RLish in the hands of some people (this writer excluded).  Pop over to Bundy Reef sometime and see if you can catch Haylee.  She’s got the skills!

For those of you who can’t wait to read instructions (yawn…), the following is from Shack’s notecard that explains the differences in the settings and key commands for using the board.  I’ve become particularly adept at the recovery from a wipe out.  For those of you ready to get out there, jump on a board and hit the waves HAVE FUN and be sure to give your feedback to your favorite neighborhood SLSA Big D!

C-3 V2 Surfboard - instructions:
________________________________

Rez it, sit on it,  and with the usual movement and direction keys, go find a wave.

Once in the wave, your Avatar(AV)  will adopt a surfing pose.  So easy ...enjoy the surf.

                                -----------------------------------

A dialog menu is displayed as you jump aboard:-

The options allow you to choose 3 different kinds of surfing experience.

Option 1 gives a more realistic feel - slower but no less difficult.
Option 2  is  faster and includes more surfing stunts.
Option 3 is faster still, weight more forward and hence gets more push from the wave than Option 2.

Select 'instructions' for a displays the the key usage.
Select 'AV surf pos' to adjust the height of the AV above the board for standing animations.
(use pg up and pg down keys  to raise/lower the AV, then select 'save and exit')
Note:  to reduce script activity, the 'fluffy' option is best left in 'disable' state when not required.

                                -----------------------------------

Use the following keys with either option :-
===========================

Keys to use whilst sitting:-
-------------------------------

Page Up.. .......................................... Displays the dialog menu
Right/left arrow with shift............. AV waves to friends
Back arrow........................................ Sit if lying / paddle backwards if sitting

Whilst paddling:-
--------------------

Page Down.. .......................................Duck dive    (provided sufficient depth is available)

In 'wipe out'
--------------

Page Up.................................................Recovers from wipe-out

Surfing positions:-
------------------

Fwd key(held): .......................................................Moves the AV to the front of the board, dips the nose and increases speed.
Back key(held): .....................................................The AV adopts a crouching position and lifts the nose of the board.
Pg down key (held)................................................AV crouch
Pg down key(quick tap).......................................AV back flip
Pg up key (quick tap)............................................AV fwd flip
Back arrow with left or right...............................Fast Turn

Advanced Board control (Option 2 and 3 only):-
=============================

Hold Fwd arrow key then Pg up key.................Board roll 360 forwards
Hold Back arrow key then Pg down key.........Board roll 360 backwards
Shift key with right arrow key.............................Board roll 360 right
Shift key with left arrow key................................Board roll 360 left

note: these stunts operate when in direct contact with a wave - they are disabled in 'fluffies'.

Motion Freeze and Self Induced Wipe-out
============================

Should a rogue wave trap the board  beneath or within  it and then  become unsurfable,  the board can be frozen whilst the wave passes by.   To achieve this simply press and hold the left and right arrow keys together.  The board will freeze and once the wave has passed by release the keys.   A wipe-out  situation will result.

                                                                ---------------------------

A summary of these instructions is available from the dialog menu.  They will appear on your screen for a while and then are viewable in your chat history.

Key notation:

Right Arrow    (D)
Left Arrow      (A)
Fwd Arrow     (W)
Back Arrow    (S)
Pg Up               (E)
Pg Down           (C)

Does size really matter?

SL Surfing Association competitions come in all shapes and sized relative to waves and surfboard types these days.  For competitions using the HP and LSD boards, a board rezzer is used so that all competitors will be surfing the same surfboard.  The old school SSi boards are different and surfers have to provide their own board.  There’s been some discussion lately about knowing whether or not you’ve got the right kind of SSi surfboard for a particular SLSA competition.  Cierra Theriac has a great post on her blog that describes the different length categories of boards and which SSi scripts are sanctioned for competitions.  The following is mostly stolen, er, paraphrased from an SLSA notecard that has been sent out with competition packs.  Some of you may have also received a copy of the board length checker.

———————————————————————————————————

To streamline the length of the competition and to make each surfer responsible for their actions, the SLSA directors have decided to do away with preliminary board checks. However, we will still perform random board checks throughout a competition and if a surfer is found competing on a board that is not fully regulation they will be disqualified. No questions, no explanations, no excuses. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you have a regulation spec surf board prior to start of competition.

What exactly does this mean? And how can each individual surfer make sure they have the right board for the right competition? Here are a few guidelines.

1. In your registration package, along with your rash guards, a board size checker will be included. Simply REZ the checker on the ground in front of you (make sure you are on land that allows you to create/REZ objects). Then REZ your board, right click and edit your board, use the colored arrows to move your board to the size checker. Take note of which post your board is closest to in size. The smallest post is a Big Dawg Board size, the middle post is a Namiko size, and the tallest post is the original SSI board size. For short board competitions you will want your board in between the Big Dawg and Namiko, for Regular/Long board competitions you will want it Namiko - SSI sized. ((see exact measurements below))

Shortboard: 2.25 meters (Big Dawg size) to 3.38 meters (Namiko Board size)
*** Longboard: 3.38 meters (Namiko size) to 4.41 meters (Full length SSi size)  ***

2. To check to make sure you have a board with original Heather scripts and Sebastian animations REZ your board somewhere that allows for object creation (your personal land or any of the public beaches). Right click your board, edit your board, select the button "More", and then look on the general tab (the first tab). The creator of the board (no matter who the board designer is) should be listed as Sebastian Saramago or Heather Goodliffe. If you see another name in the spot for creator please contact an SLSA director to have your board inspected.

Check that the SurfBoard Script is version 5.1, 5.2 or 5.2 dlg!!!

3. Finally, if you ever have any concerns, questions, or doubts that you have selected a legal competition board to surf on at any given competition always contact a SLSA director PRIOR to the scheduled surf competition.

Please surfers, be responsible for your boards and your actions. Use these tools to check your boards fully prior to competition day, ask questions prior to competition day, and show up for your scheduled heat on time and ready to go on competition day. We as directors are here to help you and help competitions run smoothly. Help us in this attempt to streamline and shorten the length of competition days for everyone's enjoyment.

———————————————————————————————————

If you can check your boards before the competition, you potentially save everyone some time, get on your waves faster, and head back to the party in the stands!!!

Good luck to all of you who are competing!!!

Memorial Observance

Sometimes one really does need to take somethings seriously.  I prefer not to very often, but this is a case where I will.

As some of you may know, MaryAnn Maa’s mother passed away recently. All friends of Maryann Maa or anyone interested in supporting Mary is cordially invited to be at Tsunami Beach Tropicana on Wednesday April 9th at 6PM SLT as her SecondLife family will gather and show support for Mary in a memorial observance of the recent passing of her mother.  As Mary held her Mother’s hand in those last days, it’s our time to show our support and offer a hand to Mary.

As it says in the sand at El Diablo:

The April updates to my public surfing sim list is posted.  You can find it at the shark warning sign at the home of the SLSA on Solace Dreams, at the landing point billboard on El Diablo, and in the information center at Encinitas on the Grid.

Surfing classes to begin

Starting this Friday, the newly formed Global Surf Treaty will begin offering surfing classes.  The classes are open to anyone interested in learning about surfing in SecondLife™ or who are wanting to learn more about the sport.  Be part of a large surfing community.  It's a great way to have fun and meet people.  It's hard to meet any friendlier people in SL than surfers.

First class to be held this Friday, April 4th at 6PM SLT (PST) at Countess Decosta's Island Sea Dreams.

Pleasure Faire

If you've ever been curious about Medieval fantasy role play in the vein of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, check out the Pleasure Faire being put on by the Light and Shadow RP group in Secondlife.  Who knows, if you're unlucky, you might even hear one of my bardly poems.  Be sure and watch out for the pick pockets  :-)

The faire runs from March 19th through the 23rd.

Bundy Reef is now open !!!

News from Bobbi Laval posted about her new surfing sim located just east of T'ai and Chi surfing sims:

Please enjoy your visit, you may hangout, surf, explore and enjoy all of the beach areas and even underwater. But please follow a few simple rules:
*   Be nice and respect other visitors.
*   If you rez something, clean up after yourself
*   This sim is not a public sandbox, so please do not use it as such.
*   Sky boxes and platforms are off-limits to visitors.
*   No unnecessary nudity, topless is ok if nobody around is offended.
*   And no biting, griefing, spamming, pushing, or any of that kind of stuff.

Visiting Bundy Reef:
The main shoreline is available for visitors to rez surfboards.
Board rezzers are also available on corner of beach.
Group members may rez boards anywhere, and to a reasonable extent free to temporarily rez other objects as long as they clean up and don't interfere with the sim or visitors and fit in with the nature and purpose of a surf beach.
Visitors are free to explore the beach and use any facilities available.

Community:
If you wish to join the Bundy Reef Surf Community group, ask any member for an invite.
Bundy Reef is a community based and operated surf sim.
The Community is operated and run by volunteers. The Community Directors are Bobbi Laval, Sally LaSalle, and Kantbe Thursday.  Community members are allowed to have parties, host events, DJ, etc. Those interested in volunteering should contact Bobbi Laval.

Rentals:
There are no residential or commercial rentals available at Bundy Reef. Chi next door has available residential and commercial space.  Many other surf sims in SL also have space available. In the future virtual sims may be available on a very limited  basis. Contact Bobbi for information.

Classes will be held at the Encinitas High School in the blue room. Surf-Jam is Back!!!

Yep, you read that right.  On Saturday, March 8th at 11AM SLT, Vibrations Surf Alliance and San Diego Surf Club are bringing back the historic Surf-Jam competitions with Surf-Jam 20!!

Saturday March 8th, 11 AM SLT

Spectator stand will be set up on Encinitas On The Grid and the competition will be next door at Swamis Beach .

There will be a cash price purse of 10,000L$ (Woooo Hooo!!!!), SJ 20 commemorative Surfboards, and Sands Custom Tri-Fin trophy board for the top 3 surfers.

If that isn't enough fun, there will be a live Jimmy Buffet concert directly after the B final!

In the words of the Big Kahuna himself (OK... so it's really VW Sands):

"Aloha!

Welcome to Surf-Jam TWENTY!

SJ 20 is being brought to you by The Vibrations Surf Alliance and our friends at the San Diego Surf Club.

If you have never surfed in Surf-Jam (SJ) perhaps a short history lesson will bring ya up to speed. Old timers, humor us............................

The VSA Surf-Jam was created back in 2007 to provide Vibes members their own contests in a relaxed and less "serious" environment, mainly for the benefit of new riders to get a taste of the comp scene before heading out to the SLSA events.  As such, SJ tends to have a more relaxed "feel" and I hope you all contribute to that while surfing here :-)

Surf-Jam is NOT an approved or sanctioned SLSA event. This contest has no bearing on your current SLSA points standing. You won´t become famous and have your own salad dressing nor will the sponsors come calling with bazillion dollar contracts. Beer drinking, bong hits and embarrassing moments encouraged. Drama, whining, verbal brawls.....zero tolerance.

Surf-Jam 20 will be held on Joaquina waves. Boards are "Surfers Choice".  Ride what you have most fun on. We all have a favorite board. I personally can´t stand boards that rocket me into 300 foot air rides but if that´s your thing go for it. Ride what ya like :-)

We will be using a modified ASP timed heat format of 15 minute heats in the pre-lim rounds and semi`s,  and 20 minutes for both finals.
The top two (2) scores from each of the 6 pre-lims will advance to the semis and the top 4 P3 scores (2 from pre-lims, 2 from semi´s) will advance to the B FINAL. This format keeps 14 of the 24 pre-lim riders in the water and 10 of 12 semi´s riders in the water :-) As always your top 2 waves will be totaled and averaged. Scoring is 0.0 - 10.00 at .5 increments.

PLEASE NOTE!
Judges and support staff will be on the spectator sim. Only the riders and Marshal on the surf sim. This should create a less laggy environment and lend to the feel of just surfing with your friends which is the whole point ;-)

The B FINAL for places 7 through 10 will be held after the main final.

ALL riders please TP to the spectator area no later than 10.45 SLT."
