New Coffee Shop and Bar Opens on Chi

Tanya's Coffee Shop and Bar
Now open!!

That's right!  Chi now has a place to come chill after a day at the beach or drop by to get a sugar and caffeine fix before hitting the surf.

Meet with friends for a coffee and a bite to eat. Settle in to a comfy chair and read a book while the sounds of the city envelop you. Come and unwind after a heavy night's clubbing and feed those munchies.

Tanya's Coffee Shop and Bar is also just above a convenient London Underground stop, so transportation is easy.

Come join Tanya for good conversation and music, or just drop in to hang out.  It's a good place for quiet alone time as well as being with friends.

Ready to open for the night

SecondLife Public Surfing Beaches - November 2015

There have been quite a few inquiries as to where people can find public surfing beaches in SecondLife.  There's a list provided at the home of the SL Surfing Association on Solace Dreams.  Look for the Shark warning sign over by the board rezzers.

The list is updated on a monthly basis (mostly).  SL regions come and go and land marks change.  This list is believed to be current at the time of this post.

If you know of a public surfing spot that isn't on this list, please IM Kantbe Thursday.

Public Surfing Sim - Island Sea Dreams

[This is a cross-post of an interview conducted for the Surf Side Cierra Theriac and Flynn Sheridan's Surf Side - Surfing in the Virtual World blog]

Surf Side begins another series describing a few of the Second Life public surfing sims from the list of those compiled and made available the the SL Surfing Association’s home sim, Solice Dreams.  In this post, Island Sea Dreams is being featured and it’s owner, Connie Decosta was gracious enough to sit down for a few minutes for the following interview:

SS:  What public surfing sims do you have?

SS:  Can you tell the readers a little about why you decided to create a surfing sim in the first place, and how ISD is different from what you've done in the past?

Connie:  My real home has always been on the beach and to share this feeling with those that may not be so lucky is beautiful.  I treasure what I have and if one other person can obtain a peace inside or enjoy the surfing  experience then I’m happy.  ISD this time round is just the one homestead. Like the last it does have a small jungle feel about it but it’s more about the waves and making sure they run smoothly. - no lag

SS:  How long has it been in SL?

Connie:  This sim has been around for years under ownership of JT [Castanea] and recently renamed Island Sea Dreams about a month ago.

SS:  What types of waves do you tend to run these days?

Connie:  Currently running - 2 sets of Maoli freestyle. 2 monster waves across the width of the sim (what a long ride that one is hehehe) & 2 Tahiti waves, 2 curlys.  Trying to paddle to the bouy is the challenge.  It’s a good work out for those that love a challenge.

SS:  Are you a surfer in either RL or SL?

Connie:  I grew up on the ocean.  My first real surfboard was a 4 fine fever.  It's a shorter board and omg does it carve it up on the smaller waves.  I was 8 when I took to the water on the waves.  SL surfing I love it and do not compete.  I competed in real from the age of 8 to 21 doing the iron woman thing and eating my weetbix. lol

SS:  Are there any special surfing or design features you’d like to tell the readers?

Connie:  I am trying to capture the reality of waves as much as possible.  Every wave is different and the timing has been changed on each set.  So every time a set runs you could get something different from the last set.  It’s great challenge.

SS:  Is there anything else about your sim(s) you’d like to tell the readers (e.g., availability of other recreational areas, shops, home rentals, etc.)?

Connie:  No rentals this time.  I have Global Surf Treaty for new surfers - the school camp will open soon.  There is a path the full length of the sim where you ride ya bike etc, hang out with friends round the fire.  There is an off sim hut - you can sit out there with friends but you have to IM in private as you’re off sim.  Great little hidden hangout.

SS:  Do you have any other regions in SL that aren’t related to surfing?  If so, can you tell us a little about them?

Connie:  Currently No other sims.  I did own a lot of land on the mainland where I had my clothing and jewelry stores.  These are all closed now days.  I just love enjoying my surfing and hanging with my best friends.

SS:  Thank you so much for your time, Connie.

Get Mooned... Twice!

I’d like to tell you about a couple of surfing sims in Second Life™.  I don’t pretend to be able to write honest to goodness full fledged sim pieces like Flynn did with Blue Hole, but I would like to tell you about Lavender Moon and the new Lavender Moon 2.

As Flynn starts with his Blue Hole write up, “Vally Lavender has done it again”.  This time, she’s done it twice.  In Val’s words, “Lavender Moon is an Adult nude beach for those who want to suntan or surf in the nude.  You'll find old school SSi triple pipes and foamies to add some nostalgia to the atmosphere.  Upon landing take the zip line to the lower beach and please do have fun.”  Watch that landing at the end of the zip line, be sure to let go before you come to an abrupt halt at the end (ouch!).

Right next door is Lavender Moon2.  This ain’t not rubber stamped duplicate of Moon by a long shot.  As Val says about this one, “Lavender Moon 2 is also an Adult beach with Maoli Dreambreak waves.  The jetties cause small waves to caress the beach as you look out to see the prettiest sunset in SL.  Dancing all over the place, hot tub, Spanish patio for posing for photos and of course the LAVA LOUNGE for live entertainment or dancing to your choice of music.”  I did try working out a bit on the chin bar, but I’m clearly more of a hanging out on a lounger type than a Muscle Beach girl.

Lavender Lounge

Be sure and check them out.  Nice builds and interesting views.

Long May Bundoran Reef Be Remembered

I know all of the "old timer" surfers in Secondlife™ will remember Bundoran Reef, one of two surfing sims provided by the West of Ireland estates.  But seeing the Bundy Reef set up in preparation for the upcoming competition and the broken surfboard display by the beach, puts me in a one of those happy, yet sad, moods to remember those last days of West of Ireland.

West of Ireland was a bone fide charity sim with ties to real life charities.  In the beginning, Linden Labs provided deeply discounted tier rates for charities.  When they decided they could no longer provide those discounts, West of Ireland had to retire its sims.  Three surfing sims were impacted; Bundoran Reef, Neart, and Crab Island.

The really (really) old time surfers in SL, especially Bobbi LaSalle (Laval), have many more memories then I do about the creation of Bundoran Reef and its sister surfing sim, Neart.  But I was fortunate to be a Reef Rider when Bundy was our home.  In those days, being a Reef Rider also meant spending some time as a service to the West of Ireland charity.  I helped out at Nancy's Pub and had the honor of helping with management of the beaches.

December of 2011 was Bundoran Reef's last appearance and was able to finish with an SL Surfing Association competition.  Although there was much gnashing of teeth, bruises, broken bones and boards, the competition was set up with a combinations of pipeline waves with boulders in the water before reaching the beach.  Bundy's last competition ended up being voted the best competition venue of the season.

Bobbi's current Bundy Reef wave design harkens back to those last days of Bundoran Reef and warms my heart (and brings more than a few tears) when I see how many people are enjoying it and especially the spontaneous and organic creation of the tribute to the rocks (my name for it).

I salute all of you and thank you for letting me be part of your community.

Not many of you probably saw Bundoran Reef on its last day.  I'm also including a picture of the sim from over head.

I'd also like to include a link to a Sun Sets on Neart video from earlier in the year.  This was many SL surfers coming to show their support and surfing during Neart's last week.  It's a little long for a youtube video, but a lot of surfers were there over those last few days.

The Waterfront Dancers Presents - The Musical Hairspray; Friday May 15th

The Waterfront Theater folks are at it again. In their 2nd performance for the month of May, the Waterfront Dancers will be performing The Musical Hairspray at 4PM SLT (PST) at their Waterfront Theater on Tai.

The narrative of this stage show is taken from the movie Hairspray and using audacity to adjust it to a Second Life production, produced and choreographed by Diddy Hyun and  performed by The Waterfront Dancers

We will be asking before the show starts to turn off your name tags in Preference/General and check name tags as off, the reason for this is some of us are running as 2 or more characters so this will avoid confusion of the story line and a lot easier visually

We would love you to come along and join in on our fun!!!

The Jersey Boys Get A Secondlife

Sometimes you hear about something that’s just too good to pass up and share with your friends.  We’ve got such a thing coming up this week at the Waterfront Theater on T’ai.

The actors and crew of Waterfront, the same ones who brought you The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert  are bringing back a production of their version of The Jersey Boys

Many don’t realize the commitment and sacrifice these talented people go through in order to bring you productions like this.  I have an unconfirmed rumor that the actor in the lead role of Franky has gone through extensive reconstructive surgeries to transform his normal tall and athletic frame to that of the small, somewhat frail Franky.  I’ve also been told that was not enough for his normal rich baritone to be able to reach some of the signature Franky high notes.  A specially fabricated appliance will be worn and the director will be off stage utilizing a wireless remote to carefully time appliance “adjustments” to help reach those particularly high notes.

Don’t miss this once in a lifetime repeat performance of The Jersey Boys this Friday, February 27, 2015 at 3PM SLT.
General admission seating will be available, so please arrive early.  The show begins promptly at 3PM SLT at the T'ai Waterfront Theater and will be full hour of great entertainment!

To help get in the Friday night mood for fun, begin by dancing at Girls on Film on Chi with DJ Tanya beginning at 2PM SLT.  After the show, rejoin DJ Tanya at Punta Hydra.

Meet Your Candidates for the SLSA Board of Directors

From the SL Surfing Association forum post:

Meet Your Candidates for Two Vacancies on the Board of Directors to be filled by an election on March 1, 2015!

An election for 2 SLSA Director Positions will be held on March 1st, using a voting machine on Solace Dreams just outside the SLSA Clubhouse.
If you are an eligible voter (i.e., you have competed in one of the last 6 events or volunteered in one of the last 3 events or are a hall of fame inductee), you will receive a notice when voting is open.

We sincerely wish to thank each of the following candidates, who graciously and selflessly have chosen to stand for election on March 1st. We thank these candidates for their community spirit and willingness to serve. They all deserve our appreciation. Each of the following statements was prepared by the respective candidates.

********************************************************

Countess Decosta

Ive been around the surfing community since 2007 and been involved in all aspects of the community.

I would love to step up and help for the next six months

Connie

********************************************************
Name: Daphne Yardley-Wayward
Team: Lucky 13
Outside of Surfing: I cheer for SLCS Cheerleaders, I help run SLCS Airlines and I'm blocker for M.Inc.Riot Bitches of the Second Life Roller Derby Association.

My vision:
I think my vision for SLSA to expand it and make it more visible across grid. WIth the visibility, it can bring more sponsors to our competitions. Also organizing concerts with tribute bands and having parties will help our brand grow and attract more people that never have surf before.

I commit to serve a 6 month term.

********************************************************

I, Zelda Zimberman, am able to stand as director and fulfill the full six month term. I surf for Montego team. I've been surfing slsa comps since 2011 and enjoy having fun during the comps.

I like surfing with everyone and open to help out the group. I'm trying for director so I can see it still running. My vision for the slsa is for it to just be active. I think collaboration and word of mouth from everyone is important for the slsa to be noticed. I would also like to see more participation and most importantly, everyone having fun! ^.^

Full Monty Performance Coming Soon (yes... again!)

That's right, but things will be a little different this time.  The performers this time will be the Waterfront Dancers joined by SL Surfing Association Team Tai Chi!

This is not your typical dance show, but a play.  Waterfront management encourages everyone to show up a little early, get all your IM's and group notices out of the way so you will be able to enjoy the entire show and follow the story line.

This will be a stage show based upon the movie and will be great fun.   And yes,  performers do end up doing the FULL MONTY!!!!!

When asked what she thought of the first performance, one member of the audience ( after being revived with smelling salts) could only utter, "Hubba, Hubba, Hubba".  Honest!  Would I make something like that up?

When:  February 7, 2015
Time:   3PM SLT
Where: The Waterfront Theater on Tai

Hope to see all of you there!

** All proceeds from this show will be given to help pay rent for the historic T'ai and Ch'i surfing sims **

First SL Surfing Association Competition Series of 2015 Season 1 Announced

The SecondLife Surfing Association Board of Directors have announced the opening venue for this year's season one competition.  On Saturday, February 21st at 11AM SLT, the Open competition will begin on the historic surfing beach, Chi!   The Pro competition will take place the following Saturday, February 28th.

SSi Shortboards will be used on the Maoli Fluffy Fun wave.

These waves are already running on Chi, so LET THE PRACTICING BEGIN!!!!

What To Do If You Have Crabs

The week long celebration of El Diablo's 1st year as a SecondLife public surfing sim begins today at 5AM SLT with a daily sim-wide hunt.  Below is Brooke's explanation of how the hunt will work:

"Ok it's time for the hunt.. I wish it was as simple as go look for a Red Crab but its not. We figure we make you work for some of the gifts we have for you, like.....

His and hers Shark tooth necklace and earrings. Mesh bikini for her and board shorts for him. Beach towels with single female, male and couple animations. Ponchos with hud control texture change. Beach chairs..  I could go on but thats just some of the gifties we have for you. Now, how to find them.

The hunt will work this way: you will find clues hidden in the RED starfish located around Diablo. If you have never seen those, well you need to look around. Clicking on a RED starfish gives you fun facts about Baja wildlife or about the special places and history of Diablo itself. But now some of these RED starfish will also contain a clue on where to find a dreaded RED CRAB containing your prize. Quick recap, find the RED STARFISH with the clue in it then find the RED CRAB.

Each day for 7 days, at 5 am SL time, a new clue will be hidden in a different RED starfish leading you to a new RED CRAB. Get the crabs and see a doctor, no i mean get the prizes. Once in place, all clues and crabs will remain until Saturday, February 7th, at 5 pm SL TIME. You will have a whole week to find the first one, but less than one day to find the last.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! When you find the red starfish, take a few minutes and read the note, not just the clue. Edumacate yourself on Diablo. Our Diablo Birthday Bash will be on Saturday the 7th, from 6pm to 9pm SL Time. ONE lucky person will win the BIG 3 PRIZE: a set one-of-a-kind Limited Edition Diablo Anniversary C-3 surfboards (Official surfboards of Scorpion Bay). There will be a trivia contest based on information in the notes found in the red starfish. You do NOT need to be present to win, but you must come to the party at some point and answer one of the questions correctly to be eligible for the drawing. SO READ THE NOTES!!!

We hope you enjoy hunting for the crabs as much as we enjoyed giving them to you. Ok that didn't come out right.

Good Luck, have fun.

Your friends at Diablo"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EL DIABLO!!!!

As you may have heard, Scorpion Bay will be celebrating their 1st Birthday of the El Diablo surfing sim.  They’ll be having a week long anniversary celebration.

Beginning Sunday February 1st at 5AM SLT, there will be a week long sim wide crab hunt with a new gift on each day.  There will be gifts for men and women.  The celebration will culminate in a beach party on Saturday the 7th from 6PM to 9PM SLT.

At the party will be a give away a set of three one of a kind, Special Edition Diablo C-3 surfboards designed and crafted by Shack Schapira, maker of the OFFICIAL surfboard of Scorpion Bay!

Prizes for Get Behind Tai Winner!

I’m sure several of you have already heard about the upcoming Get Behind Tai fund raising competition coming up on the 31st of January.  Sally LaSalle has decided to spice things up!

The winner of the competition will receive the full range of SharkBite clothing!  This means bikinis, dresses, boardies, the new ProvoCouture  mesh stocking matching HUD…. the whole nine yards (to be honest, there isn’t a nine yard kilt, but that’s beside the point).

But wait!  There’s more!!!

You’ll also get updates for life!  If my arithmetic is right, this is worth more than 7000L$ on MarketPlace!

But wait!  There’s even more!!!

What if a guy wins?  Yeah, I know, girls dominate surfing in SL, but just what if some guy wins?  What’s he going to do with all these bikinis and dresses, not to mention the stocking matching HUD?   If the winner by some quirk of nature turns out to be a guy, he can designate a woman of his choice to receive all of the women’s items.  The same holds true if a women wins.

Personally, if Nep wins, I think he could use the stocking matching HUD.  I think it would look especially good with fishnets, don’t you?

UPDATE:  Registration closes a Midnight SLT, Thursday January 29th.  If you’ve not registered yet, get you entry notecard and entry fee to Roxy Angel (roxyangel007) as soon as possible.

SLSA's End of Season Awards Ceremony!

That's right, The SLSA will be hosting their end of the 2nd 2014 season's Award Ceremony this coming Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Noon SLT.

The event will be held at Solace Beach, just next to the SLSA's home sim, Solace Dreams.  This will be a FORMAL event, so this would be an opportunity to get those kinis washed and hung out on the line.

Put on your best duds and come see if you can recognize your fellow surfers with clothes on!  Please come and support the SLSA and our surfers.  Heck, you might even have a good time.  Stranger things have happened.

Getting a Little Behind?

Behind is in the eye of the beholder, ya know.  If you’ve not been getting enough behind, sign up for the Get Behind Tai T’ai Ch’i Fund-Raiser Surf Comp Being hosted by the T’ai Ch’i Zen Surf Team.

The competition will feature the LSD Empty Restaurant Wave.  A LSD rezzer will be provided, but you can use your own LSD board too!  The competition will begin at 12PM SLT on January 31, 2015.

There’s a competition entry fee of 500L$ and will go toward helping support the home beach for T’ai Ch’i Zen.  Fees and registration notecard need to be sent to Roxy (roxyangel007).  Roxy needs your full SL name and whether or not you have any Heat preference.

Everyone is welcome to come watch.  Spectators can watch from a platform on Chi just behind and above the T’ai Ch’i Zen club house.

No Soup for You!!!

I guess it had to happen.  Like many of my friends in Second Life, I have chosen to now share my 1st Life with the vast majority of people.  Yesterday, when I logged into my Facebook account, I was presented with a screen that my name didn't meet the Facebook standards for a name.  I checked their standards, and to be honest, I don't seen how Kantbe Thursday doesn't meet their standards.

At any rate, in order to get into my account, I have a number of options, all of which require that I provide 1st Life information about myself.

I'm not much different from anyone else, and I would gladly trust Facebook with my home, all of my finances, heck, even my very life.  After all, if you can't trust Facebook, who can you trust (rhetorical question)?

I don't know what they would do with my 1st Life name.  Since the rationale of this change is so that other Facebook account holders will have confidence they're interacting with whom they think they are, I'm not sure I have any confidence that one day (if not immediately) my 1st Life name might appear right along side my Second Life name that I use for SL social networking on FaceBook.   After all, it's not like Facebook ever changes their policies whenever they want.

I just can't have that, so my SL social networking will be limited to SL itself, this blog, my microblog, and Twitter.

I'll miss all the interactions with friends on Facebook, but I simply can't abide by this policy.  Guess I'll be giving My Secondlife more of a shot or looking for something more oriented to socializing with SL friends when not inworld.

How Do You Spell Naked?

Whether you spell it naked, nude, nekkid, or whatever, the Waterfront Theatre will be presenting a Secondlife version of The Full Monty.

That's right!  Nekkid men on stage.  This is not a dance show, but an actual play.  They recommend that to be able to fully enjoy the whole show and to be able to follow the story line, get all of your AFK stuff done before the show starts so you can sit back, enjoy the presentation, and have some fun!

The show begins at 3:00PM SLT this coming Saturday, January 17, 2015.  At the Waterfront Theater on T'ai.

I have been assured that the guys will "hold up" their end of the bargain and will be end up doing THE FULL MONTY!!!

Come and enjoy the show!!!
